They'll simply pass a law forbidding security updates.
Additionally every citizen who refuses to communicate with the authorities via the Internet will be interned indefinitely because they are quite clearly enemies of the State. (Or just weary of Mr Schäuble, which probably amounts to the same.) (And there were people who believed the 1970s were bad...)
Fortunately they're not quite that stupid and have had it proven to them that mucking about at that level would mean curtains for any serious IT in Germany. My bet is that they'll develop some must-have Bundesanwendung to automate your life and minimize all those Behördengänge - along the lines of the Elsterformular program. Still wouldn't catch the terrorists, or paranoid people like me who run Windows in carefully sandbox virtual environments, but it will be enough to watch over the masses. Who are busy inputting their own data faster than than you can say "Rasterfahndung" anyway.
Have you lived in Germany long enough to remember their failure to count the masses? (Sometime back in the 1980s - after I had left.)
You mean the 1983 (?) census? No, before my time, but it's a subject which interests me (partly for professional reasons).
I notice everyone's jumping on this "People's Trojan Horse Army" thing, not just the CIA, but now the MoD have discovered all their internal stuff such as observed ebay auctions and the code to fire a few nuclear weapons have been hacked by the Chinese.
However, it seems that the Brits and the Americans still don't trust Germany, even under Merkel. "Angela Merkel, Germany's chancellor, is reported to have raised the issue of Chinese attacks on her government's computers during a visit to Beijing." She's "reported" "to have raised the issue", says the Guardian, towards the end of an article on "it's not just the US, it's affecting the UK government too!". So are they saying they don't believe her, or that they just don't know whether she's "raised the issue" or not (presumably, as she doesn't speak English). I think it's time for an English Video Podca'st by Angie to help her get the message across internationally. It was the 1987 census, I think. Shit, Elsterformular. Steuererklärung....I've still got around a fortnight, thank god. |

Mount Penguin is technically British, but has lived in Berlin for like yonks. WhatThis is a blog of odd stuff he comes across in everyday life, etc. Bit of a lucky dip really. FAQI did originally intend to put together what one day might be the ultimate Berlin FAQ. Due to global warming that hasn't yet happened, but nevertheless if you have any questions about Berlin, feel free to ask them here and I'll see if I can find an answer...
