The only piece of electioneering I've had in the post, apart from my voting card thing, was a pamphlet from one of the two parties you mention. Which is pretty piss-poor of all the other parties. Last time I voted here, I had no idea who the candidates were or what they stood for - well, apart from seeing their mugs on lampposts - and had to decide whom to vote for in a blind frenzy at the polling station. (Luckily, the blind frenzy was behind a curtain.)
They certainly don't go in for the door-to-door type of electioneering they do in the UK (my parents were politically active and I spent much of my formative years delivering mimeographed leaflets around various dismal housing estates). I don't remember ever having got much in the way of political literature in my letterbox here; I used to think it was because of the "Keine Werbung" sticker, but apparently political messages are not the same as commercial leaflets, so they would get put in anyway, if there were many. I think the best source of info, if any, are those local free newspapers, but you certainly have to go looking yourself if you want do know who's promising what.
I used to always vote for one particular party on ideological grounds, but recently I've been growing cynical as to what difference it makes (some politicians are more equally useless than others, it seems) as and was intending to spoil my ballot paper, but that would be a tragic waste. I think I'll go for one of the joke parties. (Must try a blind frenzy one of these days, sounds like it might be exciting). |

Mount Penguin is technically British, but has lived in Berlin for like yonks. WhatThis is a blog of odd stuff he comes across in everyday life, etc. Bit of a lucky dip really. FAQI did originally intend to put together what one day might be the ultimate Berlin FAQ. Due to global warming that hasn't yet happened, but nevertheless if you have any questions about Berlin, feel free to ask them here and I'll see if I can find an answer...
