I won't play on this one... But just to clarify, do you mean what the building is now? or what it used to be?? or both???
Good point. Anything that positively identifies the building will do. Including what it was used as (or who it was used by) after what it used to be and before it became what it was now.
However, I think I shall have to restrict participation to people who've been in Berlin for less than a decade, otherwise it'll be difficult to find places that aren't totally obscure yet present a tricky challenge.
Bugger. That looks familiar. (Not Mrs. Penguin's disembodied legs.) It's not the Fernsehturm, is it? It also looks a bit like that Cafe Moskau club. But perhaps it's just the general Ost-look. Do I win five pounds? (Don't know about the round thing. Is it from a brewery?) (The Russian says all my guesses are nonsense.)
The Russian is right about your specific guesses.
The round thing is in fact a bar.
It's the ex-Staatsratsgebäude and now private elite-"university" and all-round Kaderschmiede ("Hertie School of Governnance"?) next to the ex-Palast der Republik opposite the Lustgarten near to the Auswärtiges Amt and the facade of the Schinkel-Bauakademie; presumably the round bit is part of the ex-Schloß, leading up to the portal where Karl Liebknecht declared the German Socialist Republic during the revolution of 1918-1919, the only bit of the Schloss not destroyed either by Anglo-American bombers or the GDR government in the late '40s/early '50s.
Isn't it? But if the round bit is a bar, it might be from the Palast der Republik itself? Are you aware of the flickr group "guesswhereberlin", MP?
You can see Rosa and Karl towards the top of the picture; it's by Walter Womacka, who was also responsible for the decorative mosaic on the outside of the Haus des Lehrers. The title is "Geschichte der deutschen Arbeiterbewegung" (1963-64) and the original design can be seen at http://www.walter-womacka.de/bau/bau.htm (scroll down a bit).
I didn't know the new owners allowed anybody inside - I must take a look sometime.
Correct on both counts, Daggi.
The photo dates from 2002 or so, after Gerhard Schröder had moved out but before the School of People in Suits moved in. I've heard rumour that the foyer is still accessible though. I didn't know about the flickr group and will have to pretend you didn't tell me, because it's terribly addictive ("I'm sure I've seen that doorway somewhere recently").
It must have been 2002 when I was last in there myself.
Thankfully I haven't personally visited that flickr group, but I have been prone to look over a friend's shoulders saying things like "it's clearly U-Bahnhof Märkisches Museum, how long has that been unguessed, 6 weeks! who are these people, really!", or "Warschauer Straße round the other side of the station, when they say 'it's not Oberbaum City' they're strictly speaking right, but obviously very pedantic". Is the bar from the PdR then?
Damn. I won't tell him he was right. We can't have gloating.

Who,What,FAQWho
Mount Penguin is technically British, but has lived in Berlin for like yonks. WhatThis is a blog of odd stuff he comes across in everyday life, etc. Bit of a lucky dip really. FAQI did originally intend to put together what one day might be the ultimate Berlin FAQ. Due to global warming that hasn't yet happened, but nevertheless if you have any questions about Berlin, feel free to ask them here and I'll see if I can find an answer...
