I was passing through the Hauptbahnhof the other day, gaze turned upwards to watch out for bits of falling architecture, when I stumbled across this chap. Although a little on the skinny side, he's the first of a new wave of Deutsche Bahn service employees, who will be given the task of reducing customer complaints to zero - presumably with a downwards crushing motion using their forelegs.

(To be fair to DB though, they are a paragon of efficience and friendliness compared to the sad excuse of crumbling infrastructure which is all that remains of the British rail network. And they still offer a far better online timetable for the UK than anyone else).

I thought you were joking, but I have, indeed, just got the timetable for trains from London to Liverpool, a journey which, incidentally, I have no intention of undertaking. But incredible.

By the way, trains have gone quite good in the UK of late. Or maybe I've just struck lucky on the trains between Gatwick and the South Coast.

It was probably a freak weather phenomenon involving a lack of the wrong kind of snow / wind / rain or whatever. Although now you mention it, I do recall some very nice new trains on the Gatwick line last time I was there (nigh upon 18 months ago), which had replaced the embarassingly museal carriages they used to have.

...that site is the best site in the world. We've already worked out how my mother would get from London to the Russian's granny's village. Only seven changes! What a shame they can't give you a price.

Sounds like a reasonable commute. What are house prices like in Grannigorsk or wherever? I hear that from summer there'll be a direct train betwen Berlin and Irkutsk, which might cut the journey time further.
