I remember hearing something about that study. Alas, I've got a feeling it referred to people who'd been brought up with two languages. I hope I'm wrong. Aber, there was also something once about speaking Chinese (and, therefore, I guess, Thai) being good for the brain as the tonal thing does something useful or other.
My Russian is now a Germanised mess, which sometimes makes me think I have Alzheimer's. So I'm (almost) glad to read you get the lingos mixed up too. We language nerds rule (in a non-ruley kind of way)!
The study says: "The bilinguals included speakers of 25 different languages, the most prevalent being Polish, Yiddish, German, Romanian and Hungarian" who are resident in Canada, I'd guess a fair few would be immigrants.
I think what it really boils down to is keeping one's brain active, and multilingualism happens to be a useful method because it automatically keeps the brain on its figurative toes.
I hope you're right. Occasionally fumbling a sentence in Russo-German (and the odd translation here and there) is the only work-out my brain ever gets.

Mount Penguin is technically British, but has lived in Berlin for like yonks. WhatThis is a blog of odd stuff he comes across in everyday life, etc. Bit of a lucky dip really. FAQI did originally intend to put together what one day might be the ultimate Berlin FAQ. Due to global warming that hasn't yet happened, but nevertheless if you have any questions about Berlin, feel free to ask them here and I'll see if I can find an answer... Meanwhile...Do come and visit my other blog where there's likely to be more hot penguin action. Comments about IKEA Shelving Festival!
