I too an delighted that DB has "arrived" in the UK.. However much they are criticised here, they still provide a far better level of service than that currently available in the UK.
Although I fear not all of your correspondents agree with me on that point :o( http://karlmarxstrasse.blogsport.de/2008/01/21/london-overground-bought-by-deutsche-bahn/
With the purchase of the Chiltern line (when I was using it a few years ago, it was actually quite good), maybe DB is looking at realising that Great Central freight route thingy in the long term?
I agree that the level of service is much better here. Why? Because it's not (properly) privatised (yet). I don't expect DB will offer a great improvement in Britain. Afterall, NS, the Dutch railways, who unsuccessfully bid for the same company, already run a load of stuff in Liverpool, and I haven't read any "please let the Dutch run everything, they're so great" articles. I am aware that where Arriva run things though (in Bavaria) they are known for being pretty shit, probably a bit better than what they run in Wales though.
I suspect there's some curse hanging over the British railway system. They could probably let the Japanese loose on it, and it'd still suck.
Ye gods! Shropshire in Wales? It's enough to cause Owen Glyndower to rise from his grave...
And as for the train in the pic....Shropshire is no better than Herefordshire and Mid Wales even worse - even if you could find the railway line. There is the MidWales line which goes from Swansea to Shrewsbury which stops at Llandrindod Wells and other small places. I can even use my new free BUS ticket on it, so desperate are they for passengers. (But that;'s probably because there aren't a lot of buses either.) |

Mount Penguin is technically British, but has lived in Berlin for like yonks. WhatThis is a blog of odd stuff he comes across in everyday life, etc. Bit of a lucky dip really. FAQI did originally intend to put together what one day might be the ultimate Berlin FAQ. Due to global warming that hasn't yet happened, but nevertheless if you have any questions about Berlin, feel free to ask them here and I'll see if I can find an answer... Meanwhile...Do come and visit my other blog where there's likely to be more hot penguin action. Comments about IKEA Shelving Festival!
