He hasn't dared cross the border yet, though he mentions Mitte. I like his girlfriend. She played what's-'er-face in Der Untergang. A nice, smily face.
...It's green, it's clean, and the Germans are nice people. They're much more similar to the English than we sometimes like to admit.... (Sam Riley)
That's actually what we've all been saying on our Blogs for a longtime.. Although I do find his choices of places to visit a teency-weency bit predictable. He does though, make the Germans sound like Martians.. "well amazing .. they're actually NICE!" ...Kotz.. Welcome to the Club Mr Riley!
Eh, that was my next post. I see "insider" means "having lived in Charlottenburg (more exactly=at Savignyplatz with an occasional stroll along a few hundred yards of the Kantstraße*) for about 10 days", though I have been told the article's title might be "ironic". And "cheaper than Leeds", eh? Well, so is Munich.
*it seems he hasn't reached the bit full of porn 'cinemas' yet, and brothel-mafia-mobile phone shop-corner/red-light district at Stuttgarter Platz either
Hell, that bar at Savignyplatz he mentioned used to be a brothel before the rents got too high. In fact, it was rather famous, because the first thing your boss did when you arrived here to be a spy was to make you hang around that little cluster of bars to see which guy from the other side was frequenting which bar/club. Club Sophie was notorious; I think the Russian mob finally did it in.
I'm amazed shit like that gets printed. I mean, how much time does he spend at the Brandenburg Gate? And yeah, the Siegessaüle was moved from "somewhere" -- the front lawn of the Reichstag, to be precise.
You're amazed? You should read the Guardian more often (or maybe not). I find it very depressing, particularly more so, as I noticed last week that the print edition is basically identical to the dross online (but with lots of 'free gifts' and colour photos). It used to be a newspaper, once, they say.
When I'm in London I love going to Big Ben, then I drink a beer in a Pub, then I walk along the Thames because it's beautiful. My fave place to have a beer is Picadilly Circus and I buy my clothes in Carnaby Street. Once I made a Photo of London Bridge, and another one of my girlfriend with a pigeon on her head in Trafalgar square. Then I had a beer.
It's a great city, I love it.
you also forgot to mention that you just.. luuuuv eating long deep fried potato snippets covered with salt and vinegar.. it sounds disgusting.. but it tastes just great..
nochmal kotz
Didier, surely you mean "then I drink a beer in one of these quaint, typically English places the locals call a 'pub'" etc. etc.
Sam Riley doesn't have the faintest clue and his significant other has obviously not exactly broadened his horizon yet. Probably they do not leave the flat much.
Good catch, Mr. Penguin.
They've upped the ante with an audio slideshow. It seems Mr. Riley has managed to visit not only the Love Parade, Knut as a baby bear (with and without Dörflein), the building of the wall in 1961 and some mid-80s no-man's-land, as well as Potsdamer Platz and the East Side Gallery. All since arriving here!
(I haven't listened to the sound, but I am assuming that around 80% of the pictures are stock photos, even the contemporary ones) "Actor Sam Riley gives you a tour of his new home town of Berlin" http://travel.guardian.co.uk/slideshow/0,,2244305,00.html
The soundtrack sounds like it's the interview the article is based on. The guy says he spends most of his time sitting at home eating currywurst (which he seems to have a thing about) and watching The Simpsons.
It's pretty obvious that this wasn't his intention, but it makes a change to see a travel article in an English paper about Berlin that acknowledges that the western part of the city even exists.
Good point, anonymous. I want more articles in the British press about the joys of Lichterfelde, Siemensstadt, Steglitz and Wittenau. Those sure are places 'off the beaten track'...

Who,What,FAQWho
Mount Penguin is technically British, but has lived in Berlin for like yonks. WhatThis is a blog of odd stuff he comes across in everyday life, etc. Bit of a lucky dip really. FAQI did originally intend to put together what one day might be the ultimate Berlin FAQ. Due to global warming that hasn't yet happened, but nevertheless if you have any questions about Berlin, feel free to ask them here and I'll see if I can find an answer... Meanwhile...Do come and visit my other blog where there's likely to be more hot penguin action.
