I was amused in the mid-90s that BT phone boxes in Leeds had the operating instructions in English, French, German, Spanish, Italian, Russian and - yep, you've guessed it - Welsh!
Not only are there no monolingual Welsh speakers in Wales, but I can't imagine there'd be many bilingual ones in West Yorkshire who'd expect to be able to acquire the secrets to BT's 'pick up the receiver, put in your money and dial' in their other tongue. Urdu, Hindi, etc, would have made a lot more sense. Did you enjoy your trip, by the way?
It was a nice change of scenery. It was also warm enough for a bike ride up the hills, which are quite stunning (for someone used to the flatness of Berlin, at least).
Hey, you were in Highgate ..!!
IsarSteve was actually born approx 1,5km north-west of KMs grave..! My ancestors lived on Highgate Hill (right opposite the Whittington Stone) and Pond Square in Highgate.. It's yonks since I was there.. Happy New Year!
Oh I forgot.. we "norf Lunduners" tend to call Highgate.. i-git like i-pod only with a "git"..
I've also found another sign for your collection: http://img404.imageshack.us/img404/36/wsuekr01ua8.jpg I wonder who translates those things..
Very good tourism. I haven't thought to take the Russian and myself up to Highgate yet. We always end up wandering around The City (of London, none of that Westminster rubbish) and I am still often enthralled.
Happy New Year and may your posts never be stolen again.
Highgate itself isn't much to look at, coming out of the station (actually I think it was Archway), one could imagine Stanley Kubrick filming "A Clockwork Orange" in the 60's tower-block'n'shopping centre one is unceremoniously dumped in.
Happy New Year and all that. Are you still marooned off the coast of mainland Europe, or back in saner climes?
I like the clever 'subscribe to this entry' option. Hurrah!
Back in civilisation. The UK was an internet-free zone. Highgate itself is fairly nice, I think. A villagey bit. Somewhere nobody with a sane salary could dream of living, of course.
@BiB, "Highgate West Hill" was home, in my days, to the Russian diplomats in London. Has that changed?
@Penguin... "Highgate itself isn't much to look at"... excuse me!!, Archway station is incorrectly thought to be in Highgate (even by London Transport, but more so by expectant Estate Agents).. It is actually situated in Upper Holloway in the LB Islington. Highgate is part of the LB Haringey and starts a bit up the Hill. The same thing happens to Kilburn, which is often known as "West Hampstead" in Estate Agent Lingo.
Yes, sorry about that, thinking about it, up the hill was very nice, sort of Hampstead-y. Archway is listed as the nearest station to Highgate Cemetery (and is conviently on the Zone 2/3 border, thus saving ones wallet from a bit more abuse).
Llanfairllwythyfnwg is a secret village where the penguin ancestors currently live but itis Not the ancestral home. Llanfairwhatever is a beautiful place but not in January when it rains a lot nor in February when it rains a lot nor.... but definitely when the sun shines. It's quiet - no traffic, dark- no light pollution, and the air is clean and clear (when it's not foggy)- no chemical sprays or traffic fumes.
Trouble is the Penguin only visits in mid winter. There is one Welsh speaker in the village, and she's livid about the road sign. The name Llanfairetc is a made up name anyway as all Welsh places and some English border towns have all recently sprouted Welsh names - which of course nobody uses...But our postcode is English..... |
Who,What,FAQWho
Mount Penguin is technically British, but has lived in Berlin for like yonks. WhatThis is a blog of odd stuff he comes across in everyday life, etc. Bit of a lucky dip really. FAQI did originally intend to put together what one day might be the ultimate Berlin FAQ. Due to global warming that hasn't yet happened, but nevertheless if you have any questions about Berlin, feel free to ask them here and I'll see if I can find an answer...
