Impressive effort, the "Erste allgemeine Berliner Gaslaternen-Webseite". How would you translate "Diese Beleuchtungsart leuchtet seit 1826 zuverlässig ganze Stadtteile aus."?
"This method of street-lighting reliably keeps ['has reliably kept'] entire boroughs lit-up since 1826 [and when using 'kept', add 'until the present day']", perhaps? (Though I'm not happy with the dual use of 'lighting' and 'lit', but the German original does use 'Beleuchtung' and 'ausleuchtet'').
The two "Charley Says" videos/DVDs, packed full with PIFs, are, as most bizarre British-English videos, available to borrow in the Amerika Gedenkbibliothek. Along with the entire collection of BBC Shakespeare productions, and a rather fine load of DEFA/Fernsehen der DDR classical theatre productions. Why isn't the ZDF Theaterkanal on DVB-T? Incidentally, when it comes to those PIFs, I can also recommend the ballroom-dancing 'Fire Prevention' one (Stuart Hall (possibly) asking in the voice-over in a dirty/smarmy voice "What's your bedtime routine?"), and someone (David Frost? Jimmy Savile? Rolf Harris?) asking women drivers in a particuarly sexist way to use their seatbelts. And I must phone up the GASAG and ask if they have just increased the gas pressure in our road, as they were planning on doing, and whether this would lead the cookers to leak quite quickly or not. As there is a bit of a gas smell here, and a large explosion would be a shame.
Whenever I've mentioned PIFs to Germans (usually in the context of me not wanting to use escalators, or not wanting to fly kites near to electricity sub-stations or pylons) they seem to assume Britain in my youth was some kind of military dictatorship (without having any kind of detailed knowledge on what was going on in 1984-5 during the Miners' Strike). I wonder what they'd make of the no-smoking signs everywhere?
I also have a load of German (and a few English) books, incidentally, that people are welcome to have. Contact via a random content on my blog, please, and I may manage to get a list together.
Sorry about this:
Escalators: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zirp59zm1qE I think this one persuaded my parents to get a TV licence, as we lived in house number 5. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ojPnx3FQn7k And what's this? When I hear that voice, I expect three men to roll down a hill in a bathtub... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uT_wwkCoBL8
Yes, but I think they usually tended to watch the A-Team, Bullseye and whatever other rubbish LWT showed on a Saturday evening.
Scary gas-leak advertising - yes, it was an advert - with slogan "Caring for your safety" (yeah, right, that's why they haven't spent much on upkeep of gas mains since privatisation) for British Gas: http://youtube.com/watch?v=UFpJok5gko4 (from 1:20 onwards) Brian, what's the number of the gas emergency service? It's stuck to the front of the gas meter in the fuse cupboard - use my lighter to see better... Hang on, I'll just light my cigarillo first. No I won't, just teasing... "Even a spark from a light switch, turned on or off for example, can light escaping gas." What other examples are there for light switch usage? And that class-struggle-themed episode of Duty Free (who would have thought it, the northeners were socialists) plugged at the end of the adbreak... my, how sitcoms have changed.
Favourite Gaslantern in Berlin: corner of Wattstraße and Voltastraße. Priceless!
You're aware of the gas lamp "museum" in the Tiergarten, which starts right about at the Tiergarten S-Bahn stop? Lamps from all over Germany and Europe, all of which (usually) work.
Ah yes, I took some photos there recently and wondered if they actually work (it's not an area one tends to pass through at night).

Who,What,FAQWho
Mount Penguin is technically British, but has lived in Berlin for like yonks. WhatThis is a blog of odd stuff he comes across in everyday life, etc. Bit of a lucky dip really. FAQI did originally intend to put together what one day might be the ultimate Berlin FAQ. Due to global warming that hasn't yet happened, but nevertheless if you have any questions about Berlin, feel free to ask them here and I'll see if I can find an answer... Meanwhile...Do come and visit my other blog where there's likely to be more hot penguin action.
