Well, there'll be probably quite a few people who'll believe your last paragraph and then born Berliners like me will have to set the record straight for inquiring Americans. But you're certainly spinning a nice yarn there.
The more traditional Fasnacht customs in Baden-Württemberg (Schwäbisch-alemannische Fasnacht) or Switzerland (Basler Fasnacht) are easy to accept. It's much more of a cultural event with long-standing traditions and a certain degree of craftsmanship involved. It's the Fasching in the Rhineland that's giving Germany a bad name. Stale jokes, lots of alcohol, no sense of any dignity whatsoever, silly costumes like the Funkenmariechen and guys dressed up as men (Jungfrau im Dreigestirn). Awful. Plus a lot of TV coverage like "Mainz wie es singt und lacht". But what can one expect from repressed Catholics? May this type of Fasching never gain any support in this fair city.
Well, DIY legends make life more interesting.
I was in Basel once shortly after the Fasnacht and did get the impression it was somehow in a different class to the events further down the Rhine. |

Mount Penguin is technically British, but has lived in Berlin for like yonks. WhatThis is a blog of odd stuff he comes across in everyday life, etc. Bit of a lucky dip really. FAQI did originally intend to put together what one day might be the ultimate Berlin FAQ. Due to global warming that hasn't yet happened, but nevertheless if you have any questions about Berlin, feel free to ask them here and I'll see if I can find an answer... Meanwhile...Do come and visit my other blog where there's likely to be more hot penguin action. Comments about IKEA Shelving Festival!
